The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens ~ a Unity Plaza Partner
Exciting changes are taking place on the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens’ campus! The Museum is embarking on a landscape enhancement project along Riverside Avenue. This project encompasses the renovation of the entire Riverside Avenue portion of The Cummer campus. During this phase of construction, the entire campus will be unified by sustainable landscape design, a public sculpture garden and outdoor café seating. The Cummer campus will become an important bridge between Riverside and Downtown.
If you have driven down Riverside Avenue lately, you have seen all the construction happening at The Cummer. The construction fence in front of the sculpture garden and café expansion has been removed, granting full view of these areas. Footing for the new deck is installed, the framework for the sculpture garden architecture is in, and a majority of the sidewalks have been extended to their new width of 19 feet, complete with limestone edging.
Of course, the best view of the action is from inside the café. So next time you’re in the area, enjoy a cup of coffee or a quick bite and watch the final phase of the Landscape Enhancement Project unfold before your eyes! Be sure to mark your calendars for its big community opening on Saturday, September 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Need some relief from the summer heat? Then step inside The Cummer to view these exciting exhibitions currently on display. Future Retro: The Great Age of the American Automobile, on view through September 8, 2013, features drawings from the collection of Jean S. and Frederick A. Sharf in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The drawings showcase the beauty and ingenuity of American automotive design during the decades following World War II, a landmark period in car styling. These illustrations, from preliminary sketches to fully rendered works, provide a rare glimpse into the creative process of some of America’s premiere car designers. Featured along with these two-dimensional works are classic automobiles, organized by Bill Warner, Founder and Chairman of Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.
La Florida, on view through October 6, 2013, celebrates 500 years of Florida art. The exhibition highlights works in The Cummer’s own collections, including landscapes by such well-known artists as Winslow Homer and Martin Johnson Heade. In addition, a selection of contemporary art from museums, galleries and collectors throughout Florida celebrates the state’s creativity while demonstrating the increasing influence that environmental concerns play in Florida art.
